Literary Translation

Literary translation is an art. It requires preserving not just meaning, but voice, rhythm, imagery, tone, and the invisible cultural assumptions that make a text resonate with readers. Our literary translators are published authors and poets themselves. They understand that translating a novel is rewriting it — faithfully, beautifully, in a new language. We translate: novels and novellas (literary fiction, genre fiction, historical fiction, contemporary); short story collections; poetry (maintaining meter, rhyme scheme, or free verse structure as appropriate); essays and creative nonfiction; childrens books and young adult literature; theatrical plays and screenplays; and academic literary criticism. Our process includes: initial reading and analysis of the source text; translation with attention to register, dialect, idiolect, and narrative voice; revision by a second literary translator; and author consultation (when possible) for ambiguous passages, wordplay, and cultural references.
